What does this do?
You might think this looks more like an octopus than a spider, but it’s neither cephalopod nor arachnid, just a really efficient way of sowing seeds. Each arm (leg, tentacle etc.) has a sharp hard, chisel point which penetrates into the soil surface, releasing seeds into the resulting channel and ensuring good soil contact with the seed. As seeds then do, they sprout and grow into plants. They could be grass plants (usual, if it’s grass seed you’re sowing) or any other kind of plants you might want.
The Seed Spider has a high work rate (up to 1 hectare an hour) and electronic metering of the seed ensures the right density of seed for the application.
Why do I need one?
For equestrians, the most often used application for the seed spider would be in adding plant species into an existing sward. For example, if you wanted to add some meadow fescue (or any other horse-friendly plant mix) to your paddock to improve grazing, you would use the seed spider to ‘stitch’ the seed into the grass. Before doing this, it would be advantageous to thoroughly harrow the paddock first to remove thatch.
Then the new seeds can make the most of the available light and moisture to germinate and thrive. Once established with these delicious additions to a horse’s diet, the paddock will be the grazing equivalent of at least one Michelin star. If you were then to ask your horse if he/she would like to go back to the simple, grass-only paddock, guess what they’d say!
Where do I use it?
Paddocks and fields. Never leave any implements out after use where animals can come into contact with them - you can work out why!
How does it work?
You fill the hopper with the seeds you want; set the electronic metering up to deliver the amount you want; take the Seed Spider to the place you want to start; lower the tips to the working position; tow the Seed Spider at the appropriate speed for the task. Job done, seeds sowed! Watch ‘em grow!
